"Sometimes it takes a calamity in our lives to point out how very fortunate we are.
"Several weeks ago I was admitted to Anna Jaques Hospital for a hip replacement operation. I arrived in a wheelchair, for by now I was no longer able to walk. I do not have an adequate vocabulary to describe the pain I had been experiencing for months prior to the operation. I was put on a gurney and wheeled in to pre-op. The team of medics there were very capable and professional in making the time prior to the operation as comfortable and reassuring as possible. After the operation, I was taken to a room on the third floor; and within 24 hours of my being admitted, I was undergoing rehabilitation, which meant out of bed taking my first baby steps ... with no pain. I stayed at the Anna Jaques for three days and I can't thank them enough for the excellent treatment I received there.
"After three days I was transferred to Kindred, a rehabilitation facility on Low Street. You and I know it by its more familiar name, Country Manor. In the past, I had on several occasions visited friends who were there, but to really get to know and understand a place you need to be part of its activities. I was there for the next two weeks. In that two-week period, I went from physical therapy to occupational therapy to checkups by nurses and aides. In between, there were adequate rest periods. I found the entire staff of care givers from housekeepers to aides, therapists, nurses, doctors very capable, cheerful and encouraging.
"I attribute much of their success to the efforts of the case manager, Rhoda Connolly, and executive director, Nathan Arbouet. They are very visible and concerned with all aspects of patient care.
"Food is an important part of the healing process, so I cannot finish this without mentioning the usually much-maligned institutional food providers. At Country Manor I found the food nutritious, well-planned and diverse. Kudos to the head chef.
"In ending I can only conclude that we folks in Newburyport are very fortunate to have facilities such as Anna Jaques and Country Manor to lean on when the going gets rough."
